Coup in the US (Failed)
Millions of people have bought into Trump’s idea of electoral fraud and now there are congressmen openly denying the reality. From there it is very difficult to rescue democracy.
Donal Trump doesn’t want to leave
Donald Trump, president of the United States, has done everything possible to manipulate the election result and ignore the president-elect, Joe Biden. His attacks on democracy and his failed coup are sowing deep and dangerous divisions in the United States, but also with global influence.
Eleven members of the Republican Party have already pledged not to recognize the election of Joe Biden, something that Congress must do to certify the result sent by the Electoral College. They are not enough to jettison the victory of the Democratic candidate, but they are sending a very damaging message. They repeat ad nauseam that there was a fraud, that there is a conspiracy, that the elections were stolen, and that the registries of each state were bought. To date, they have not provided any acceptable evidence. Trump was defeated more than 50 times in the courts, but reality does not matter to them.
How do we dialogue with those who live in a parallel world and refuse to see the facts? One MP even took photos of himself wearing a mask that reads, “Trump won.” No, he did not win. Why don’t they accept it?
Political degradation is eating away at America’s institutions from within. With its global influence, that does not give much hope to those of us who defend the principles of liberal democracy. Joe Biden has a lot of work to do and if the Democrats do not win Georgia’s special legislative election, his presidency is likely to be passed amid the deadlock.
All that panorama already existed before the audios revealed this Sunday. The Washington Post published a conversation between Donald Trump and Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s secretary of state, where the president had a surprise defeat. In the recording, Trump is heard saying: “I just want to find 11,780 votes,” and he insists that there is “nothing wrong with saying that you have recalculated [the votes].”
What’s wrong is that those 11,780 votes don’t exist. This is what Raffensperger tells you: “The problem you have, Mr. President, is that the data you have is incorrect.” Trump responded with legal threats. It is important to add that the Secretary of State is part of the Republican Party.
Sure, Trump doesn’t exactly say, “I want you to commit a crime.” Would anyone be so explicit? But the insistent pressure from the president and his disdain for democracy is enough for anyone to connect the dots.
There is no other way of calling it: they want to stage a coup. They are failing, so far and thankfully, thanks to robust institutions and the ineptitude of Trump’s team; But millions of people have bought into the idea of electoral fraud and now there are congressmen openly denying the reality. From there it is very difficult to rescue democracy.
On January 20, Joe Biden will take office as president of the United States, but the attacks on the legitimacy of his election will continue.
And you? What do you think?…
